Author's Introduction to the DVD-ROM

Introduction by
Oksana Sachyk, Ph.D.

Intermediate Ukrainian is designed for English speaking learners who already have been introduced to the basics of the Ukrainian language. The course is created as a continuation of Beginning Ukrainian, published by the University of Arizona Critical Languages Series in 2005. Intermediate Ukrainian contains a combination of learner directed and instructor directed activities and could equally be used by learners who are studying the language either on their own or in the classroom. Overall, material presented in the course covers approximately two semesters of university studies.

Intermediate Ukrainian includes 20 lessons (11 dialogs and 9 readings) and is intended to expand knowledge of Ukrainian grammar and practical vocabulary. Each of the lessons will help learners practice all four primary language skills: comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Topics in this course touch upon various subjects such as travel, transportation, holidays, sports, health, and others. All lessons in Intermediate Ukrainian follow a connected story line of two characters. In addition to linguistic components, learners will encounter multiple cultural elements embedded in texts, footnotes and graphics of the course.
